# Organize conversations with titles, labels, and filters

Rename a conversation, configure AI naming, create reusable labels, and filter the list to find tasks that need attention.

## Choose how to organize your work

Start with a title that describes the task, then use labels to group related work. This guide uses local main conversations such as “Investigate payment callbacks,” “Improve settings,” and “Prepare the weekly report.”

| What you want to do | Where to go |
| --------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------ |
| Rename one conversation or request an AI suggestion | Right-click its sidebar row → Rename… |
| Configure automatic naming, its model, and prompt | Settings → Session organization → Naming rules |
| Create labels shared by several conversations | Settings → Session organization → Labels |
| Apply a label, emoji, or color to a conversation | Right-click its sidebar row → Markers |
| Show tasks with a particular label | Conversation list filter button → Custom labels |
| Change text size and marker or status positions | Settings → Appearance → Sidebar and session list |

## Give one conversation a clear title

1. Right-click “Investigate payment callbacks” and choose **Rename…**.
2. Enter “Investigate duplicate payment callbacks” and click **Save**.
3. Check the new title in the sidebar. A title you save manually is protected from automatic naming.

For a suggestion, click **Generate with AI** in the rename dialog. You can still edit the result; **Save** applies it. Closing the dialog does not apply an unsaved suggestion. If the conversation is running, wait for it to finish before generating a suggestion, or rename it manually.

AI naming sends a request to your chosen provider and may incur usage. You can use **Generate with AI** even when automatic naming is off.

## Configure automatic naming

Open **Settings → Session organization → Naming rules**:

1. Turn on **Automatically update conversation titles** if you want it.
2. Choose an available provider and model under **Naming model**. This model generates titles; it does not replace the model used by the conversation.
3. Review the **Naming prompt**. After editing, wait for **All changes saved automatically**. If saving fails, use **Retry save**.

![Naming rules with the automatic naming switch and prompt](https://onevium.com/assets/docs/session-naming-en.png "Isolated demonstration of the real 1.2.2 components. The sample prompt is editable; no model was called, and the displayed settings are not your current configuration.")

Enabling this does not rename all historical conversations immediately. For an eligible conversation, the first attempt normally follows a completed reply to a meaningful user message. After a successful naming attempt, later updates also wait for at least 15 minutes, five new meaningful user messages, and a clear change of topic. Short confirmations such as “continue” do not count as new task messages.

The model may keep an already useful title. Failed initial attempts use separate retry timing; do not send filler messages to trigger another update. To work on one title now, use **Generate with AI**.

## Adapt a naming template

Choose a format from **Fill from an example** to insert its complete instructions and examples. Edit the text as needed, or use **Undo example** to restore what was there before. Filling a template does not call AI.

For example, to name tasks by date and action:

```text
Use the format “{{month_day}} · Specific task”.
Keep the subject and action that help me find this conversation again.
Do not claim completion unless the task is actually complete.
Example: 09-28 · Investigate duplicate payment callbacks
```

`{{month_day}}` is the month and day; `{{date}}` is the full date. The app inserts the local date **when a naming request starts**. A new request on another day uses that day's date. Retrying or saving an existing suggestion keeps the date of its original request.

The format reference below the prompt is illustrative. Actual titles depend on the conversation and model response. Try your rule on one conversation before keeping it for everyday use.

## Create a reusable label

Create “Needs review” for tasks whose results you still need to inspect.

1. Open **Settings → Session organization → Labels** and click **New label**.
2. Enter “Needs review.” The marker beside the name is optional; choose an emoji or a color if useful.
3. Click **Save label** and confirm that it appears in the list.

![Creating a Needs review label](https://onevium.com/assets/docs/session-labels-en.png "Real 1.2.2 label controls with isolated sample data. This is the editing state: click Save label to apply it. Labels do not use the naming prompt's automatic save behavior.")

To change a label later, click **Edit**, then save again. Deleting a label removes that category and its associations, not the conversations themselves. To remove it from just one conversation, deselect it in that conversation's **Markers** panel instead.

## Apply the label to conversations

1. Return to the sidebar. Right-click “Investigate duplicate payment callbacks” → **Markers**.
2. Select “Needs review” under **Custom labels** and click **Save markers**.
3. Repeat for “Improve settings,” then check both rows in the list.

An emoji or color is a visual marker for one conversation. “Needs review” is a reusable label that can also be filtered. Your label does not change the actual running or completed state and does not stop a task.

## Find the tasks that need review

Open the conversation list's **filter** button and select “Needs review” under **Custom labels**. The list now follows that filter. You can combine it with date, source, model, and sort choices.

Check that both sample conversations appear. After reviewing one task, deselect “Needs review” in its **Markers** panel and save. It will disappear from the filtered results, but the conversation has not been deleted.

When a historical conversation seems missing, clear filters and search text, check whether its project is collapsed, and look in [Archived sessions](https://onevium.com/docs/projects-and-sessions#archive). An empty filter result is not a reason to create the same task again.

## Preview suggestions for several titles

To organize historical tasks, check and enable the relevant tools in **Settings → Tools → Sessions**, then send a request with an explicit scope:

```text
Preview title suggestions for conversations in the current project from the last seven days.
List each original title, suggested title, and reason for skipping a conversation. Do not apply changes yet.
Do not replace titles I saved manually or process other projects.
```

Review the project, selected conversations, and individual suggestions before explicitly asking to apply the ones you want. If a scope confirmation appears, check it before continuing. Skipped conversations, failures, and missing suggestions are not completed renames; read the actual result.

This workflow uses conversation tools, so there is no separate “bulk rename” menu to find. Start with a few conversations and keep manual-title protection.

## Make titles easier to read in the sidebar

**Appearance → Sidebar and session list** controls presentation. Try **Status on the right** to keep markers and source icons on the left. Sidebar text size is independent of message and code text.

Sender, group, and contact names for channel conversations are optional display prefixes; they do not replace saved titles. Default width and navigation menu settings are in the same section. Follow [Settings and data](https://onevium.com/docs/settings-and-data#first-task) for those steps.

## Troubleshooting

| What you see | What to check |
| ----------------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Automatic naming is on but old titles do not change immediately | Has a new meaningful conversation completed? Is the title manual? The model may also keep it |
| An AI suggestion appeared but the sidebar still has the old title | Click Save in the rename dialog |
| A label exists in settings but is absent from the conversation | The label definition and conversation markers are saved separately; select it in Markers and save |
| Prompt changes do not persist after reopening settings | Check automatic save status and retry errors; labels require Save label |
| Tasks disappear after filtering | Clear labels, dates, sources, models, and search terms; check collapsed projects |
| AI naming fails | Check the naming model's connection, quota, and availability; keep a manual title and retry after fixing the connection |
